I’m taking the morning off to read and pray..
I’m one who likes to think I’m pretty smart…predicting the outcome of a situation using the information at hand…I guess that’s the Scientist in me. When this comes to me and God, it gets in the way. I like to know where I’m going…what the next step is, so I can prepare for it. If I can prepare for it….counting on my resourcefulness and talents, it will not fail….Right? Not knowing what to expect is hard for me.
Over the next few months, I’m reading through the Bible in French…quite a daunting task, but a rewarding one. Today, I was reading about Abram(Abraham) and Lot, and Jacob(Israel). These men would say or do ANYTHING just to save their own skin.
Why did God choose Abram? He was a coward who lied to Pharoah to protect his life. God, rather than punishing Abram for lying, sent plagues on Egypt for their unknown indecency with Sarai. God made a promise to him it is said that: “Abram believed the Lord, and He credited it to him as righteousness.” Soon, he got impatient, and when Sarai offered Hagar to him as a shortcut…he jumped at the chance. (Anyone see a little Adam/Eve action going on here?) This illegitimate child spawned a race that would fight his children for millenia to come.
Why Lot? He’s the one that, living in the contradiction of Sodom, offered his virgin daughters to the crowd to ravish rather than his angelic guests. While this act saved his life, I can’t help but think that he should have gotten out of the situation long before the day of destruction. This taste of sin probably resulted in the deception of his daughters against him in Gen 19:32-36.
Why Jacob? God chose him, despite the fact that he was a conniving, and God let him keep whatever he lied to get. Esau, a good man, got nothing. A Christian might wonder why Issac wasn’t punished for his deception…but his line grew to be Israel. Just browse through Genesis to see his faults.
Was the world so corrupt that these were the best men out there? We know this to be the case with Noah and Lot. Or did God want to show us that His house could be built on the Rock, even if built with crumbling bricks.
Ps 118:22 The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.
I can imagine the other nations looking at these God-called leaders, wondering what was so special about them…and even that more would have turned to God if his chosen people had been more “appealing”. Yes…each time one of the founding fathers faltered (say that 10 times fast), God’s delivery on promises was delayed. As I said in my testimony, how much easier would things have been for Man if we’d just believed God and been obedient in the first place?
Rich Mullins: AlrightOKUhhuhAmen
Don’t have to be no hunger
Don’t have to be no war
Don’t love this world any longer
Better learn how to say yes to the Lord
Alrightokuhhuhamen
AlrightokuhhuhamenYou can argue with your Maker
Or know the joy of saying yes to, to Him

For men of God, impatience seemed to be their biggest fault. They knew for sure what they were promised, and yet couldn’t wait to start the ball rolling. I’d love to do a study on the consequences of each sin of the founding fathers.
For example: In his thirst, Moses struck the rock instead of speaking to it (Num 20:8) as he had been commanded.
Bad:
- Moses had sinned.
- This action stole glory from God, and Israel was forced to wander until the death of Moses.
- This delay sowed the seeds of complaint and impatience among the Jews that would continue…well, forever.
Despite the disobedience, God still worked his glory, though it took longer!
Good:
- Immediate desires for water were satisfied.
- The 40 years fortified them, turning them from a bunch of submissive slaves into a strong nation.
- Joshua was trained to became a new leader.
- Many more miracles followed.
I don’t have answers to all these questions, and don’t expect to. I just thank God that He has chosen yet another imperfect man to do his work here in Africa…that despite my faults he continues to bless me, bless the people of Cameroon, and bring Himself glory through my feeble works. I believe with my whole heart that this is where I’m meant to be and what He wants me to do…but I have always been impatient to have insight about who will walk beside me. Please pray for me regarding a partner…that I will wait for God’s direction and not continue to push impatiently. Paradoxically, and looking at the sins of the founding fathers, I expect that this impatience in this area is why I still walk alone.
Here’s a song for you: Rich Mullins: Sometimes by Step. Focus on the fact that one of the stars that Abraham saw had been lit for you.
Sometimes the night was beautiful
Sometimes the sky was so far away
Sometimes it seemed to steep so close
You could touch it but your heart would break
Sometimes the morning came too soon
Sometimes the day could be so hot
There was so worth much left to do
But so much you’d already done
Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise you
Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise you
And I will seek You in the morning
And I will learn to walk in Your ways
And step by step You’ll lead me
And I will follow You all of my daysSometimes I think of Abraham
How one star he saw had been lit from me
He was a stranger in this land
And I am that no less than he
And on this road to righteousness
Sometimes the climb can be so steep
I may falter in my steps
But never beyond Your reachOh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You
Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You
I will seek You in the morning
And I will learn to walk in Your ways
And step by step You’ll lead me
And I will follow You all of my daysAnd I will follow You all of my days
And I will follow You all of my days
And step by step You’ll lead me
And I will follow You all of my days~Rich Mullins
Take comfort in each step, knowing that God has the future planned out for the good of those who love Him. Take comfort that He won’t abandon us when we falter as long as we keep believing and climbing. If we do sin, in His mercy He will work through those consequences to make us more trusting of him in the future. If we obey and don’t sin, we will be blessed.
Mark 16:23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.”
Don’t be a hindrance to God’s glory. Trust that God knows what’s best for you. Pray to God, flee from sin, and never forget that we need him…in every step..to do that.
Let Mercy Lead: Rich Mullins
Let mercy lead
Let love be the strength in your legs
And in every footprint that you leave
There’ll be a drop of grace
Till all have heard
